Running the gamut from multi-star bastions of haute cuisine to eateries of modest fare, Monterey County ranks as a food lovers' paradise for gourmets, gourmands, and the just plain hungry. Chefs revel in preparations with fresh catch from Monterey Bay, just-picked fruit and vegetables from Salinas Valley, and fine wines produced throughout the region. Lettuce, strawberries and artichokes abound here, and some 40 award-winning wineries, many with tasting rooms, include Chateau Julien Wine Estate, Pariaso Springs Vineyards, Chalone Vineyard, Hahn Estates Smith & Hook Winery, and Galante Vineyards. May is popular for Monterey food and wine festivals, including the Castroville Artichoke Festival, the Salinas Valley Fair, and the Steinbeck Wine Country Spring Open House. Carmel brims with restaurants for romantic dinners for two, while families enjoy casual dining at Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf. Ethnic cuisine stretches from Thai or Pacific Rim to Mexican, and there’s no shortage of good old-fashioned hamburgers. In Salinas, Steinbeck House, the 15-room birthplace and boyhood home of author John Steinbeck, operates as a luncheon restaurant, thanks to the Valley Guild.
