May is popular for Monterey food and wine festivals, including the Castroville Artichoke Festival, the Salinas Valley Fair, and the Steinbeck Wine Country Spring Open House. Carmel brims with restaurants for romantic dinners for two, while families enjoy casual dining at Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf. Ethnic cuisine stretches from Thai or Pacific Rim to Mexican, and there's no shortage of good old-fashioned hamburgers. In Salinas, Steinbeck House, the 15-room birthplace and boyhood home of author John Steinbeck, operates as a luncheon restaurant, thanks to the Valley Guild.
